Question
What, if any, experimental evidence do you have that the equilibrium is affected by the addition of H_2SO_4 solution? Briefly explain. (6) Are your observation and explanation in (5) consistent with lessthanorequalto Chatelier's principle? Briefly explain. (7) What, if any, experimental evidence do you have that the equilibrium is affected by the addition of NaOH solution? Briefly explain. (8) Are your observation and explanation in (7) consistent with lessthanorequalto Chatelier's principle? Briefly explain.Explanation / Answer
5) CrO4 2- (aq, yellow) + 2 H3O+ (aq) Cr2O7 2-(aq, orange) + 3 H2O
The indication for which way the reaction shifts when changes were made in the system is based on the color of these two ions in solution: chromate ion is bright yellow in solution, whereas dichromate ion is bright orange.
The relative position of equilibrium can be determined by observing the color of the solution. Anything that causes a shift to the right will result in the solution turning orange, while a shift to the left would result in formation of a yellow solution. You will observe the effect of adding acid and base to this reaction mixture.
1) If H2SO4 solution added immediate effect is increase in H3O+ concentration dark yellow colour obseved
Application of Le Chatelier's principle: Equilibrium position moves to the right, using up the some of the additional H2SO4 and produces more Cr2O7 2-(aq, orange) and H2O
New Equilibrium Position Established:Solution becomes less yellow than it was immediately following the addition of the H2SO4
2)If NaOH solution added, NaOH reacts with the hydrogen ion in the equilibrium system and removes it. immediate effect is solution became orange
Application of Le Chatelier's principle:If the H+ is removed from the equilibrium system, the system will have to react equilibrium position moves to the left
New Equilibrium Position Established:Solution becomes less orange than it was immediately following the addition of the NaOH
