Antigen- Antibody Reactions

1. Streptococci are divided into different groups called serotypes. Consult this or other textbooks and explain what determines the different serotypes (A-O) of streptococci?

2. Why was the known organism given to you to type?

3. What was the source of the antigen for the latex agglutination test you performed?

4. In what fraction of our blood (fluid or cellular) are the immunoglobulins (antibodies) such as IgG or IgM found?

5. Why is that antigen-antibody complexes are visible in aggregated clumps, and yet red blood cells are microscopic?

6. You may have heard terms “universal donor” and “universal recipient” Refer to Table 1 again and determine which person (Type O, A, B, or AB) is considered a universal donor and which is a universal recipient. Explain your answer?

Explanation / Answer

1. Serotype is defined as variation among species of bacteria or viruses etc. Serotype is classified based on the antibodies against the surface antigens of bacteria. So there are different surface antigen of Streptococci. This also means that from serotypes A-O there are different surface antigen.
