Question
An air-purification method for enclosed spaces involves the use of "scrubbers" containing aqueous lithium hydroxide, which reacts with carbon dioxide to produce lithium carbonate and water: 2LiOH(aq) + CO_2(g) rightarrow Li_2 CO_3(s) + H_2 O(l) Consider the air supply in a submarine with a total volume of 2.5 times 10^5 L. The pressure is 0.9970 atm, and the temperature is 25degreeC. By how much would the pressure in the submarine drop if 2.55 kg of LiOH were completely consumed by reaction with CO_2? | atmExplanation / Answer
1st calculate the initial mol of CO2 present using
P*V = n*R*T
0.9970 atm * 2.5*10^5 L = n*0.0821 atmL/mol-K * (25+273) K
n = 10187.7 mol
mol of LiOH reacted =mass/molar mass
= 2550 g / 23.95 g/mol
=106.47 mol
2 mol of LiOH reacts with 1 mol of CO2
so,
moles of CO2 reacted = 106.47/2 = 53.235 mol
moles of CO2 remaining, nf = 10187.7 - 53.235 = 10134.465 mol
use:
Pi/Pf = ni/nf
0.9970/Pf = 10187.7/10134.465
Pf = 0.9918 atm
Answer: 0.9918 atm
