Question
Consider the following figure. (Assume V = 20.0 V, R1 = 0.02 ?, and R2 = 6.54 ?.)
(a) Is it possible to reduce the circuit shown in the figure above to a single equivalent resistor connected across the battery? Explain.
This answer has not been graded yet.
(b) Find the current in the 0.02-? resistor.
A
(c) Calculate the power delivered by the battery to the circuit.
W
Explanation / Answer
a)
Here , for resistances in parallel ,
1/Rp = 1/R1 + 1/R2
for resistance in series ,
Rs = R1 + R2 + ..
Now, 1/Rp = 1/3 + 1/6.54
Rp = 2.06 Ohm
Now, Req = 0.02 + 2.06 + 4
Req = 6.08 Ohm
the equivalent resistance is 6.08 Ohm
b)
Now, Using Ohm's law
V = I*R
I = 20/6.08
I = 3.29 A
the current in the 0.02 Ohm is 3.29 A
c)
Power = V*I
Power = 20 * 3.29
Power = 65.83 W
the power delivered by the battery is 65.83 W
