Question
Conceptualize- momentum
1a. Ten trained hamsters drop vertically from a ledge onto a skateboard moving at constant speed below. What happens to the motion of the skateboard if its mass equals that of all the hamsters? The hamsters now begin to leap off one by one. Explain what happens, and any assumptions you make.
1b. An astronaut working outside his spacecraft remains attached by a rope. Why is the rope so important? The astronaut discovers that the rope has come loose from the spacecraft! Should he pull on the rope anyway?
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
1a . as the momentum of the skateboard is conserved in the vertical direction ,
the speed of the board will start to dcrease when the hamesters are falling,
and the speed of board will be half when all the hamesters are on the board.
NOw ,when the hamesters jump away , they have same horizontal velocity as the board and the speed of board don't change.
1b)
yes , rope is important as the force is needed for the astronaut to stop him form going away from the spacecraft.
He should pull the rope anyway ,
coz , pulling the rope will give him velocity in oposite direction to the pulling of rope
