Question

Calculate the impulse imparted to the object in the followiing colisions.
A
a. A 0.5 kg hockey puck moving at 35 m/s hits a straw bale, stopping in 1 secound.
b. A t-ball with a mass of .2 kg travels in the air at 15 m.s until it is stopped in glove of a shortstop over a period of .1 seconds
c. A 12,000 kg tank moving at 4m/s is brought to a halt in 2 seconds by a reinforced-steel tank barrier.

B
What is the avergae net force exerted by these objects on the objects they collide with?

I dont have any clue how to solve this please help i know that change in momentum equals net force x change in time but cant figure out how to plug this information in. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

Hi, We have Impulse = Force * time of interaction. and Force = m * a. In our case, initial velocity just at start of interaction is given. Final velocity is zero as they came to rest. We also have time. Hence find the acceleration from it. Then we get Impulse in each case. For Average force, we have Fav = (Initial momentum - Final momentum)/time. a). From v = u + at we have 0 = 35 + a*1.                                      => a = -35m/s^2 (-ve sign implies its decceleration)      Hence F = m * a = 0.5 * 35 = 17.5 N (ignoring -ve sign).      Hence Impulse = 17.5 * 1 = 17.5 N-S      Fav = [(0.5 * 35) - 0] / 1 = 17.5 N Similarly b) Impulse = 3 N-S     Fav = 30N c) Impulse = 48000 N-S     Fav = 24000N c) Impulse = 48000 N-S     Fav = 24000N     Fav = 24000N Hope this helps you.
