Question

A 2.2 kg soccer ball is kicked from the ground with an initial speed of 19.5 m/s at an
upward angle of 45 degrees. A player 55 m away in the direction of the kick starts running to meet the ball at that instant. What must be her average speed if she is to meet the ball just as it hits the ground?

I need someone to check my answer on this one. I got that her average speed must be 5.78 m/s in order to meet the ball just as it hits the ground. Please show work...

Explanation / Answer

vertical component of initial speed, v(v) = 19.5sin45 =19.5/sqrt(2) horizontal component of initial speed, v(h) = 19.5cos45 = 19.5/sqrt(2) t = time taken by the ball to go up and down to hit the ground => t = 2*v(v)/g = 2*19.5/sqrt(2)/9.8 = 2.814 s horiz. distance travelled in t time = v(h)*t = 19.5/sqrt(2)*2.814 = 38.8 m distance travelled by player in time t = 55 - 38.8 = 16.2 m her average speed = distance/time = 16.2/2.814 = 5.76 m/s (NASWER)
