Question
HERE IS THE QUESTION :
Instruction Follow all the instruction in the syllabus to solve the problems. Points will be deducted for not adhering to the guidelines. Grading will be stringent as it is a take home exam. Please read the questions carefully. Use your best handwriting while answering the questions. Write all assumptions you are making for every problem. Write all the equations you use before substituting the values into it. You must write all your units in the equations and show all conversions and interpolations wherever applicable. Draw P-v, T-v, etc. diagrams where applicable. Use a straight edge. Draw a picture which is representative of process being analyzed. Two piston-cylinder arrangements, A and B, have their gas chambers connected by a pipe. Cross-sectional areas are AA = 75 cm2 and AB = 25 cm2 with the piston mass in A being mA = 25 kg. Outside pressure is 100 kPa and acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2. Find the mass mB so that the pistons balance one another.
Explanation / Answer
force by A= force by B
mass of A * g + pressure at A * area of A = mass of B * g+ pressure at B * area of B
25 *9.81 + 100*10^3 Pa * 75*10^-4 = mass of B *9.81 + 100*10^3 *25*10^-4
mass of B= 75.96 Kg
