Consider the planetary gear shown below. Determine the angular velocities of all the gears and the arm and their directions for the following two cases using tabulation methods: the ring gear is fixed and the arm is rotating at 1000rpm in clockwise direction the arm and the sun ring are rotating at 200rpm and 100rpm, respectively and both in the clockwise direction

Explanation / Answer

A) Since the arm is rotating at 1000rpm and the outer ring is at rest.

therefore angular velocity of gear 3 is N3(planet) = 60*1000/20 = 3000rpm in anticlockwise direction.

and the angular velocity of gear 2 is N2(sun) = ((60*1000)+(20*3000))/40 = 3000rpm in clockwise direction.

B) angular velocity of gear 3(planet) is N3=(200*60-100*40)/20=400rpm in clockwise direction.

angular velocity of ring is N=(200*60+400*20)/80=250rpm in clockwise direction.
