Question

Chapter 24, Problem 025 A plastic rod has been bent into a circle of radius R = 5.96 cm. It has a charge Q1 = +3.70 pC uniformly distributed along one-quarter of its circumference and a charge Q2 =-6Q1 uniformly distributed along the rest of the circumference (see the figure). With V = 0 at infinity, what is the electric potential (a) at the center C of the circle and (b) at point P, which is on the central axis of the circle at distance D = 4.69 cm from the center? 0: RC (a) Number (b) Number Show Work is REQUIRED for this question: Units Units Open Show Work

Explanation / Answer

A)

Potential at point is given by,

V = k q/r

V = (9 x 10^9){(q1/r1) + (q2/r2)}

V = (9 x 10^9)(1/ 0.0596)(3.7 - 22.2) x 10^-12 = 2.79 V

B)

For point P,

r1 = r2 = sqrt(R^2 + D^2) = 7.58 cm

V = (9 x 10^9)(1/ 0.758)(3.7 - 22.2) x 10^-12 = -2.20 V
