Question
An electric power metering box will allow measurement of line voltage and current, kW and power factor when a Davey pump system is operating. The meter box contains power factor correction capacitors which can be switched in parallel with the load.
Describe what happens to current, true power, apparent power and power factor when progressively larger capacitors are used?
Why wouldnt calculated power agree with measured power?
Explain how adding more capacitors causes the changes described above in current, true power, apparent power and power factor?
Explanation / Answer
On increasing capacitance , the impedence will decrease. Therefore the amount of cureent will increase.
Since the current increases the true power also increases.
The apparent power remains almost constant , as the reactive power decreases as the capacitance is increased.
The power factor increases since the true power increases .
From the power traingle , i.e since a power factor exists , the true power and the measure power are different. The measured power also includes reactive power. Hence , they are different
