Question

Identify and describe 3 different scenarios in which use of CRISPR-Cas9 has been proposed to be beneficial 1. 2. 3. What is your position on this new, easy to use, and widely applicable technology? Address the following points in the space below. " Why is there a proposed ethical controversy over use of CRISPR-Cas9 and genome editing? Do you think legislative action governing use should be implemented regarding use in embryos and disease? Should we specify between debilitating impairments such as muscular dystrophy vs mild ones such as astigmatism? What for non-disease characteristics like eye color? Should specific criteria be developed to identify what modifications are "acceptable" or "unacceptable"? If so, what criteria would you suggest? Who do you think should decide-legislators, scientists, medical doctors, patients, citizens?

Explanation / Answer

CRISPR-Cas9 stands for Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated protein-9 nuclease. It is the latest molecular biology tool known as genome editing tool. the three main beneficial used of this technology are as follows:

1. It introduces single point mutations (deletions or insertions) in a particular target gene through the single guide RNA.

2.It helps in single gene activation as well as genome editing with the help of an external stimulus like light or small signal molecules.

3. CRISPR/Cas9 based RNA-guided Nucleases can be used as biomedicine for treating cancer like diseases.

Example: It was able to eradicate viral DNA in the case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)

This cutting edge molecular biology tool has initiated many controversies for it's being used in modifying human germline to get the desired trait. The International Summit on Human Gene Editing committee declared that gene editing technology should not be used to modify human embryos that are intended for use in establishing a pregnancy. The various other ethical issues related to it highlighted are as follows:

Large genomes containing multiple DNA sequences which are identical or highly homologous target DNA sequence. CRISPR/Cas9 may cleave these sequences causing mutations which may cause cell death or transformation.

Safety measures for using this technology are necessary to avoid disseminations of organisms that may cause ecological damage or affect human health.

In my opinion, CRISPR/Cas9 should be used only in cases where the disease is the limiting factor in one's life but not for getting the desired trait like eye color etc.The type of diseases which requires this technology for treatment should be specified and be only treated with this technology. If its not of much difference to one's life it should not be treated by using it.

Yes, the guidelines should be there where to use it and where not to use this cutting-edge technology for the benefit of human race only. For example, when certain disease or impairment are required to be treated than the only human should be edited. It should not be freely available for a consumer to use. there should be restrictions in using this technology also the people should be made aware of its wrong impact or side effects in the human race.

In my view, it should be the collaborative effort of expertise in every field to decide the best for the human race. After all, everyone in their field is working for the benefit of human race only.
