Explanation / Answer

Violence refers to intentionally causing physical or psychological harm to an individual, group or a community by means of any physical force or power. School violence is a part of youth violence. Violent behaviors may include bullying, fighting, weapon use, electronic aggression, gang violence, etc. A survey including a sample of students of Grade 9-12 showed that 7.8% got involved into physical fights. Male students(10.3%) tend to get more involved in physical fights than female students( 5.0%). 5.6% students skipped going to school for one or more days because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school . 4.1% reported carrying weapons to school and 6.0% reported of being threatened or injured with the weapons in school.

The steps taken by school to prevent school violence are:

Juvenile units are present in dealing with the juvenile cases in police. The juveniles are mostly detained after arrests. In case of status offense, the juveniles are either released to parents or referred to any alternative social program or referred to juvenile court after arrest. After taking a juvenile into custody, the case is evaluated and processed into the system by the process called "booking". In specific situations, their finger prints, photographs or DNA are collected in case of need. However, the juvenile are made aware of their Miranda rights and they are also allowed to call their parents or guardians for any help. The police can take any juvenile into custody depending on probable cause or suspicion.

The amount of discretion given to the law enforment is thought to be inappropriate in certain cases. The police does not need to get any proper arrest warrant or search warrant in case of juveniles and they are mostly arrested on the basis of any suspicion or probable cause. The police might often take advantage of their rights or on their basis of suspicion, might arrest anyone who might later be found to be innocent. Moreover, the rights of the youth might be intruded upon by the police at times. The girls are thought to be less harmful than the boys and cases of status offense are more common in girls than boys.

Though traditional bullying and cyber bullying are similar fundamentally, their lies a difference between the ways they are done and their intensity, which makes cyber bullying a more threatening form of bullying. The first difference between traditional bullying and cyber bullying is that in traditional bullying the victim is aware the person who is bullying, whereas in cyber bullying the bullies might hide their identity. Thus, since the perpetrator is not physically present in front of the victim, he or she has an extra degree of protection. Hence, the victim has no idea who is harassing them and this might worson their coping skills to the act of bullying. Secondly, since the perpetrator is not visible in the external world and to the victim in case of cyber bulleying, the perpetrator can be more abusive and aggressive to the victim and since they do not witness the effect of the bully to the victim physically, the amount of guilt is also less which encourages them to be more aggressive. However in traditional bully, there is an amount of guilt and their physical presence in the external world reduces the aggressiveness of the act of bully. Thirdly, in cyber bullying, the victim is completely unaware of the type, time and place of attack by the perpetrator, which makes the victim more vulnerable to the bullying activity and might intensify the effects of the bully on the victim. Whereas, in traditional bully, the victim might be aware of where the bully can take place and in what form since they can have a preconceived idea about it. Finally, in cyber bullying, the number of bystanders are more compared to the traditional bullying pattern as there may be more people in the social networking sites, who, may even in some or the other way, also participate in the activity of bullying by sharing or forwarding those posts of bully. Moreover, in cyber bullying, the victims are more threatened to report about the bully as they might be very shameful for them and they might lose their prestige in the society to those people who are still unaware of the bully. They also might be scared to lose the priviledges of using their computer, internet or smartphone, etc.

The Four pronged threat assesment has been released by FBI in 1999 to assess someone who has made the threat and evaluate the likelihood that the threat will actually be carried out. The threat assessment model is based on the totality of circumstances in four major areas :

This includes questionnaires and assessments to look into the above mentioned four aspects in order to detect the potential threat hereafter. This is done only after the threat is done.
