Question
Consider a process consisting of three resources. Assume there exists unlimited demand for the product. Resource 1 has a processing time of 6 minutes per unit. Resource 2 has a processing time of 3 minutes per unit. Resource 3 has a processing time of 5 minutes per unit. Resource 1 Resource2 Resource 3 All three resources are staffed by one worker. The flow diagram is shown above. Round "Capacity of resource" to 3 decimal places. a. What is the capacity of resource 27 b. What is the ottloneck in the process? c. What is the utilization of resource 27 0.333 units per minute 1 Resource 50 percent How long does it take the process to produce 200 units starting with d an empty system, assuming this is a worker-paced process? d. minutes References eBook & ResourcesExplanation / Answer
Answer to question d :
Time it will take to produce 200 units when the process starts empty
= Amount of time it will take for the first bottle to go through all 3 processes and come out of the system + Cycle time of the system ( seconds per bottle) x 199 units
Since bottleneck process is the “Resource 1” with cycle time of 6 minutes/ unit , it decides the amount of time each unit has to spend at each resource ( processing + idle time ) .
Thus amount of time first unit has to spend at each of 3 resources = 6 minutes
Therefore , amount of time first unit will take to come out of the system = 6 x 3 = 18 minutes
Also, overall cycle time of the system ( as decided by cycle time of the bottleneck process ) = 6 minutes/ unit
Therefore , amount of time taken for 499 bottles to come out of the system = 6 minutes/ unit x 199 units = 1194 minutes
Therefore,
Time it will take to produce 200 units when the process starts empty
= Amount of time it will take for the first unit to go through all 3 processes and come out of the system + Amount of time taken for 199 units to come out of the system
= 18 + 1194 minutes
= 1212 minutes
IT WILL TAKE 1212 MINUTES FOR THE PROCESS TO PRODUCE 200 UNITS STARTING WITH AN EMPTY SYSTEM
IT WILL TAKE 1212 MINUTES FOR THE PROCESS TO PRODUCE 200 UNITS STARTING WITH AN EMPTY SYSTEM
