Question
What questions would you like answered by a social scientific study? Pick a question that interests you, and describe how you would design a sociology study to answer that question. List what you would do for each step (for example, topic: homelessness; detailed question: why are we seeing an increase in the number of homeless women and children?, etc). Be sure to list what you would do for every step outlined in your textbook. Then, explain your choice of a research method. Why did you choose this method (survey, qualitative interviews, etc.), and why do you think it’s the best choice?
Explanation / Answer
The aim of any scientific inquiry is to collect facts about an object, phenomenon, system or a problem. Depending upon the above mentioned investigation category we should answer the questions whether they are explanatory, illustrative or narrative.
The questions that we normally answer in a “social scientific study” are as follows:
The question I choose - Is there any connection between income and obseity in America:
My study for the above question would be have been based as under:
Step 1 - Review the available literature on America's per capita income & prcentage of obsesity in America
Step 2 - Define the area of my reaserach (whether country side or city side)
Step 3 - Slect the desighn of my study like will it be:
Step 3 - Collection of revelant data of research
Step 4 - Interpretation of the findings
Step 5 - Publishing of the finding in a systemic manner in the form of a literature
What we can do for each steps as mentioned above:
Step 1 -
Review all the literatures from newspapers, internet, magazines, books & journals
Also assimilate the data of the interview I would take with some Social Scientists & University Professors
Step 2 - Area of research
After a detail study I would go for Analytical Method since it involves overall study of past & present data
Step 3 - I will collect and systematize all the data in different category for eg. book, internet, interview findings, old, medium & new
Step 4 - Here I will use either Quantitative (To quantify extent of variation in a phenomenon, situation,
issue etc). or Qualitative method (To describe variation in a phenomenon, situation, issue, etc.)
Step 5 - The publishing of my study will be systematic in terms of index, context, findings & conclusions and organized in terms of data, solutions and answers
My choice of research method will be "Mix of Quantitative & Qualitative Method" because to some extent all questions may be approached either quantitatively or qualitatively. It all depends on what is our chief goal. Are we interested in a systematic approach, in order to produce comparable, general sable data, or do we want to produce a "thick" description of a particular case/group/situation/context? Every option has different kinds of planning, which may best be followed by a particular research design. Nevertheless, combination or mixed method approaches prove to be very useful in many situations, and seem to give answers to many of the problems, which comes from a single methodological approach as per the study problem
Other reasons we should consider:
So that’s how we should adopt our strategy to deal with Social Scientific Study as human behaviour should be assessed and measured with precautions with respect to variety of cultural and attitude difference.
