Question
Two particles of mass m1= 2.2 kg and mass m2 = 4.5 kg that are free to move on a horizontal track are initially held at rest so that they compress a spring as shown in the figure below. The spring has a spring constant k = 395 N/m and is compressed 0.14 m. Find the final velocities of the two particles.
I got the right answer for v2 (=0.75) but I can't figure out v1...I thought the formula for v1 was v1= (m2/m1)*v2...in this case I got v1= 2.05*0.75...but this is the wrong answer for v1. help please!
v1 = m/s v2 = m/sExplanation / Answer
According to conservation of momentum, m1*0+m2*0 =m1*v1+m2*v2
=> v1 =-(m1/m2)*v2
Therefore, v2 should be negative if v1 is positive or vice versa.Please include the sign in answer.
