Question

Chapter 28, Problem 086 Your answer is partially correct. Try again An electron has velocityV- (35 40 ) km/s as it enters a uniform magnetic field B - 68 uT. What are (a) the radius of the helical path taken by the electron and (b) the pitch of that path? (c) To an observer looking into the magnetic field region from the entrance point of the electron, does the electron spiral clockwise or counterclockwise as it moves? The charge of an electron is -1.602 x 1019 c and its mass is 9.109 x 1031 kg (a)Number 3.35E-3 (b) Numbe2.89E-11 Unitst m c)[clockwise

Explanation / Answer

pitch = velocity *time

time can be found by using eqn t = 2pi m/qB

t = 2*3.14*9.11*10^-31/(1.6*10^-19*68*10^-6)

t =0.526 *10^-6 sec

so pitch = 35000* 0.526*10^-6

= 0.018 m
