Question

Directions: This paper is a self-reflection paper that will give you an opportunity to better analyze and define your personal and professional ethics and values system/s. Oftentimes people will wear different "hats" inside and outside of their work environments or choose to engage with others through different identities. In this essay, identify whether you "live by" an ethics and values system that is common to both your personal and professional life. If not, write why you choose to wear different "hats" or "live by" two ethics and values systems. If you are unlike most people and you operate from one ethics and values system in and outside of your work environment, write why and how. Please address the following four points in your paper: Use the five values that you identified during the coat of arms assignment in this assignment (BALANCE, CITIZENSHIP, KNOWLEDGE,ACHIEVEMENT, HAPPINESS).

The five values from your coat of arms should form the foundation of your personal and or professional values system; Determine whether you "operate" from two separate values systems--one personal values system and one professional values system or whether you "operate" from one values system; Why do you believe you must "operate" from one or two values systems in a business setting/environment? Explain a "real" situation in which your values system/s was/were challenged, compromised, or questioned. How did this make you feel? Why did you "stand your ground" or why did you "bend" or "give in" when your values system/s were challenged, compromised, or questioned? Please note that your reflection essay must not exceed two double-spaced pages (Arial or Times New Roman--12 font). To this point, please make sure your paper is free of grammatical and punctuation errors. More importantly, make sure your thoughts are concisely written.

The purpose of this paper is for you to begin thinking (if you have not already done so) about your modus vivendi and modus operandi especially within the context of a business environment.

In summary fashion, a narrative offers you an opportunity to think and write about yourself. When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author's.

Explanation / Answer

Our Personal system of values and ethics which serves as a personal guide and decision making tool in all decisions as well as responses and behaviours in personal as well as professional life, is usually variable and adaptable. Many of the deep rooted values inculcated during childhood may become habits and reflexes, which begin to operate at an unconscious level. Earlier when society and the world at large were mostly closed places for most of the population, a large percentage not even having travelled to the neighbouring City, the moral values an object within a certain society and culture received natural protection resulting from segregation and isolation. With unprecedented advancement in technology cultures and societies across the globe have mingled like never before. This has necessitated cross referencing of values and ethics which prevail across societies in different countries and continents. This intermingling has resulted in Greater awareness for questioning existing value system and adopting the best system across the world which may be suitable for an individual. It also essentially has posed people to become more adaptable and flexible in the approach leading to ease of change in values, thinking and behaviours. With the globalisation of the economy an individual is required to work in global organisations with Value systems and cultures which may be foreign to the one followed by the individual. In the current scenario this has resulted in most individuals following a dual system of values one reserved for personal life and interactions and other tailored to suit the professional life. I am no different from most individuals exposed to global cultures through social media interactions and employment with Global concerns.

Maintaining basic values of honesty, integrity, discipline, diligence, patriotism and compassion which are common to most cultures, on the personal front is quite easy and simple. However, in a business environment within a global organisation the very perception of certain values can differ greatly. Due to this variance in perception all values and ago certain modification with honesty as you have known it no longer having the same meaning and being open to suitable modifications and alterations which may prove beneficial to the organisation. Many values maybe similarly modifiable, thereby taking on a definition different from the one we are habituated to. It may not be entirely immoral or wrongful acts but simply in the interest of the organisation. It would be impossible for an organisation to survive without such tweaking in the current environment. The question which is relevant for me as an individual, is that, how far and how much is acceptable. Once I had gotten over the initial shock and internal turmoil caused due to exposure in the professional environment to an entirely different definition of morality and values, I decided to make certain important decisions. I undertook an extensive assessment of my value system involving a deep in a search of what truly mattered to me as an individual, which were the values I was willing to compromise to an extent one and which were firmly not subject to any modification. A lot of soul searching finally resulted in the decision that any tough situation I was faced with which involved taking a decision on an ethical basis, I would ask myself one major question that who would be impacted by this decision, how would they be impacted and does the decision cause harm to the person or people impacted. From that day to the current day, I have applied the simple process and can see that it has been successful because I am yet to suffer guilt pangs over any wrongful decision or act of mine which caused harm advertently or inadvertently to another.

The situation which forced me to go into extensive soul searching and take a firm decision was due to an incident which occurred at my workplace. I was working as commercial manager with a Telecom multinational organisation. During routine checking of accounting records in my free time which I undertook voluntarily to avoid excess workload and stress during audit report time, I came across certain journal entries within the cash and bank accounts which resulted in showing receipts through adjustments. In my naivete and innocence I immediately brought it to the notice of my boss and was surprised at his look of unease and discomfort. I was extremely disappointed as it was my first job and I was elated at having uncovered such grave errors in the accounts, so I expected appreciation and commendation. Attitude of my boss left me short I see also directed me to not undertake any further checking. I did not follow is instructions and continued the checking without bringing it to his notice and uncovered large amounts of receipts having been adjusted in the same manner. I had made a comprehensive list and decided to walk into the general managers office with the same to inform him about the discrepancy. It so happened that we had a visit from the head office of the director Finance, at that very time. When I informed the general manager he put me off saying that we would discuss it after the visit was over. However, during the visit I was called in for verification of certain accounts by the director and finally this resulted in the entire picture honestly been presented to him, as I thought this the best opportunity to bring the issue to the notice of the top management. Of course, it resulted in major chaos within the organisation with the resignation of the general manager who was also involved in the scam along with my immediate boss, the finance manager. This incident did not leave me and skirt due to the extensive upheaval post by my action it became difficult for most of my colleagues to relate to me naturally and normally which led me to decide to leave the job. This was unimportant event in my life which lead me to create a clear system of values for myself, to be followed in my professional life. In my opinion, within personal life values should not be modifiable, as it could result in a trend followed by every generation culminating in a final product which may not be acceptable to or recognizable by us.
